At the beginning of the 20th
century, the region had one million trees, but the
1929 and 1956 frosts reduced this number to 230,000
trees. Abandoned in favour of more profitable vineyards,
olive growing was declining, but the Nyonsais and Baronnies
producers fought to have this special fruit recognised.
In 1968 the region's olives were awarded an "appellation
d'origine" (label of origin) followed by an AOC
(label of guaranteed origin) in 1994, a first for this
type of product.
